What's the Benefit of Organic
Gardening
Many people don't realize it, but there are many benefits to
organic gardening. The top three benefits of organic
gardening though, include being healthier for our
environment, healthier for our bodies, and organic produce
tastes better.
Organic gardening is the process of growing fruits,
vegetables and other plants without using chemical fertilizers,
weed killers or pest control products. All these commonly used
gardening products are harmful to both the environment around
us, as well as harmful to our bodies too. Let's look at each
organic gardening benefit in detail...
Organic Gardening Is Good For The
Environment
Using organic gardening methods will help keep our earth
healthy. This is a very important benefit of organic gardening
that many people don't realize at first. When you use chemical
fertilizers, pest control products and weed killers, you are
harming the soil you're planting in. Over time, the soil
becomes worn out, water sources become contaminated, and
beneficial wildlife and insects will start dying.
When using organic gardening methods however, the topsoil
doesn't erode and the soil and water don't become toxic either.
Wildlife and insects flourish around organic gardening too,
because they're not slowly being poisoned by the chemicals
commonly used.
Organic Gardening Is Good For Your
Health
Perhaps the greatest benefit of organic gardening is the
tremendous health benefits it provides you and your family.
When you eat commercially grown vegetables and fruits bought
from a store, you're often ingesting residual chemicals,
pesticides and genetically engineered organisms. And while you
can rinse or wash the food before cooking it, that does not
remove the entire problem. Since chemicals and harmful
ingredients are used during the growing season for these foods,
those chemicals are actually absorbed by the foods too.
Just as our bodies can absorb harmful chemicals if we're
exposed to them all the time, so can plants. Plants derrive
their nutrition from the soil they're planted in, and the water
used to hydrate them. If the soil and water is polluted with
harmful chemicals, those elements are absorbed by the plants
grown with the contaminated soil and water.
Not only are you avoiding harmful chemicals when eating
organic produce, but you may be getting additional nutrition
too. Many experts and researchers state that organic garden
vegetables and fruits are much higher in nutrients and vitamins
than foods grown with common garden chemicals.
Organic Produce Tastes Better
It's hard to imagine until you've actually tasted the
difference yourself, but fruits and vegetables grown in an
organic garden have much better tastes! It's not uncommon for
organically grown produce to yield more fruits and vegetables
than those grown with chemicals, and the ripe fruits and
vegetables are often much plumper, juicier and tastier too.
These are the biggest benefits of organic gardening, but
there truly are many other benefits as well. Organic gardening
is less expensive for instance, because you're not spending
money on the various chemicals and you're not having to buy
additional nutrients to help your plants stay healthy.
And if saving money isn't a big enough benefit of organic
gardening, then this should be: Your family is safer when you
garden organically. Since you don't have dangerous chemicals
around your home, there is no risk of your children or pets
being poisoned accidentally.
