How to Get an Instant Flower
Garden
Spring is
here and we're all ready to have gorgeous flowers blooming away
in our yards and gardens. For some of us, we just want the
flowers to make our yards look beautiful instantly. We don't
want to wait weeks or maybe months for seeds and plants to grow
and start blooming colorful flowers.
And
thankfully, it is possible to have an instant flower
garden. Well it's as close to instant as you can get,
it might actually take you a few hours to complete depending on
how large of a garden you want. It all starts though, with a
short drive to your local garden center.
This
article will assume you have nothing prepared yet, but you know
where you want your flower garden to be. You'll need to measure
that area before leaving for the garden center too though,
because the length and width will allow you to put a nice
border around your new flower garden bed.
Step #1: This is optional,
but it really adds a lot to the finished look of your instant
flower garden. Pick out a flower bed border. Borders can be
simple bricks, cobblestones, or even decorative little fences
made from plastic. I suggest buying enough bricks or stones to
stack them two or three high, because this will make creating
the instant flower garden easier.
Another
optional choice: Choose some mulch or bark to protect your
instant flower bed once it's been created.
Step #2: Pick out your
garden soil. If you live in a dry area, try some of the soil
which has water crystals in it. These crystals absorb water,
and slowly release them back to your flowers over time. This
means you don't have to water your flowers as often, and you
don't risk them dying on you from getting too dried out. An
enriched soil with fertilizer in it is also nice, because it
gives your new flower garden just the extra food it needs to
really thrive. Buy enough soil to create several inches of
depth in your new flower garden bed.
Step #3: Pick your plants.
Buying the small starter seedling plants is less expensive and
allows you to choose from a larger variety of flowers. Most of
these also already have flowers in bloom on them too, and this
is required to make your own instant flower garden. Choose
enough plants for the size of your bed, without making it too
crowded.
Step #4: Take it all home.
Put your new border around the outside of the area you plan to
place the instant flower garden. If you bought extra materials
to build it up in height a little, put those in place too.
You'll end up with a small retaining wall which will make your
instant flower garden be in a slightly raised bed, and save you
a lot of digging.
Step #5: Dump at least three
quarters of the new soil into the flower bed, inside the
borders. Spread it evenly. Optional: You can do a big of
digging and weeding first if you'd like, to help loosen the
soil that will be under your flower bed. You can also spread
newspapers before putting the new soil in place, to help
prevent weed growth.
Step #6: Place your small
starter seedling flower plants in any arrangement you'd like
inside the bed. Dig a small hole in the new soil you just
placed, then take the flower plant out of it's plastic
container, and place it into the hole. Use some of the
remaining soil to pack around the new plant, dividing it evenly
so you'll have enough for each of your new
plants.
If you
bought mulch or bark, then spread that evenly around once the
flowers are all planted. Cover as much of the soil as you can
with it, to help keep it from drying out.
Then you're
done! If you followed these simple steps, you now have an
instant flower garden with beautiful, colorful
flowers.
